Shaheem Abrahams talks about the passing of Nelson Mandela
"What a regal presence the man had," Abrahams recalled in an interview on Friday. "He towered over most of us, and his voice reached into your soul and squeezed it."
During that visit, Abrahams said Mandela thanked students that were involved with the anti apartheid movement.
"I remember seeing and feeling goose bumps whilst in his presence," Abrahams continued. "He was indeed a 'president in waiting' for what he did to move South Africa toward democracy."
Mandela devoted his life to the fight against white domination,moncler laden. He founded the African National Congress Youth League in 1944.
An advocate of armed resistance to apartheid, Mandela helped form the armed wing of the African National Congress. He traveled the African continent and Europe to guerrilla warfare methods.
In 1962, Mandela was arrested for incitement and illegally leaving the country, and sentenced to five years in prison. While behind bars he was charged with sabotage and plotting to overthrow the government, which led to a life sentence.
Mandela spent the next 28 years in prison. He was released in 1990, an event that was broadcast world wide to millions of viewers. de Klerk, the white Afrikaner leader who freed him from prison and negotiated the end of apartheid. In 1994,.de/lebens, Mandela became South Africa's first black president at the age of 76.
Abrahams said he remembered watching on television how Mandela cajoled the leaders of various political parties and factions to "stay at the political table," and to sacrifice for the good of the country.
"In many ways he is the glue," Abrahams said. "The cement that held that fledgling democracy, that fragile democracy, together in its earliest moments after it was born."
Mandela's message spread in other ways, including athletics. In 1995 Mandela led the push to bring the Rugby World Cup to South Africa. "I firmly believe the world would be a better place today if we had a few more Mandelas still with us to impact the world the way he had. Rest in peace Madiba. We will miss you always."
